OYO CENTRAL: We’re Concerned About A Safe, Clean Environment – Says Senator Akintunde As Lawmaker Distributes Eco-friendly Cooking Stoves

In conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Environment, while appreciating the importance of healthcare and the wellness of his constituents, the Distinguished Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Dr Yunus Akintunde, has facilitated the distribution of eco-friendly cooking stoves to 5,000 women across the 118 wards of Oyo Central Senatorial District.

The distribution of the various types of environmentally friendly cooking stoves started with the Ogbomoso zone on Monday, later moved to the Oyo zone on Tuesday and was concluded on Wednesday at a glamorous event which was held at Faith Joe Event Centre, Akobo, Ibadan.
The Honourable Minister of Environment Alhaji Balarabe Abbas Lawal, who was represented at the event by Mrs Victoria Pwol, Director Department of Climate Change, and other members of the team, including Mrs Precious Onuvae, Secretary, Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cooking, Abuja, and Mr Adefunke Adewale, Controller in the Federal Ministry of Environment, explained the importance of the initiative aimed at mitigating circumstances of unhealthy positions and hazardous effects of traditional cooking with wood causing serious health challenges among women and children.

In her words,”Aside several other issues of environmental degradation of deforestation and pollution which this kind of initiative aimed to address, critical to the present administration is the wellness of the citizens. These environmentally friendly cooking stoves will mitigate against high mortality rates and deadly ailments caused by the traditional use of firewood and other unhealthy situations our women folks and children are exposed to in our various communities.”

Senator Yunus Akintunde, who was ably represented by Hon. (Dr) Joshua Oyebamiji, the All Progressives Congress(APC) Senatorial Chairman for Oyo Central Senatorial District, among several other leaders, including APC women leaders across the Senatorial District and executives of professional groups present at the various events in Oyo, Ogbomosho and Ibadan zones, expressed appreciation to Senator Yunus Akintunde on this initiative.
Dr Yunus Akintunde, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment, in his words said,”I am committed to issues of healthy living and a clean and friendly environment among our people. This collaboration effort with the Ministry of Environment has provided us the rare opportunity to provide these eco-friendly cooking stoves and prevent the ever-challenging serious health hazards associated with the simple cooking of meals, where several lives have been lost and several others are nursing ailments that are avoidable with the deployment of this kind of initiative”.
“In my capacity as the Chairman Senate Committee on Environment, while also deploying my expertise as a professional on energy and environment, we will continue to collaborate with other relevant MDAs to ensure absolute commitment towards several initiatives that will guarantee a sustainable, clean and safe environment and healthy living in our various communities.”
The lawmaker promised more of such palliatives and empowerment programmes that are targeted towards solving critical issues of enhancement of living conditions of constituents on a steady and regular basis.
Women of Oyo Central Senatorial District, other constituents and professional groups such as the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) led by the State Chairperson, Mrs Omolola Alao, POWEN, the Christian Association of Nigeria Women wing, Muslim community women and others who will enjoy the benefits of this laudable initiative have expressed appreciation to Senator Yunus Akintunde and the Ministry of Environment under Alahji Balarabe Abbas Lawal for the laudable initiative.
