2023 Senatorship: Time for Religious Balance in Oyo-State – Says Christian Youth Leadership Forum.
History they say is a great teacher as this could not be relegated in political and social discourse. It is time to have a balance in electing or choosing flag bearers for our political parties in this dispensation.
We the stakeholders under the auspices of Christian Youth Leadership Forum, Oyo state have come together and arrived at this foregoing:
Going down recent memory lane, it could be observed that:
2015 – 2019
All the three senators in the state were Muslims; Soji Akanbi, Fatai Buhari and Monsurat Sumonu.
2019 – 2023
The three elected senators are also of Muslim background; Fatai Buhari, Teslim Folarin and Kola Balogun.
2023 – 2027
Christain aspirants should be given a chance. Particularly from Oyo Central which has not produced a christain senator before. Whereas from oyo south we have had Dr Peter Adeyemo and Femi Lanlehin and from Oyo North we have had Robert Koleoso.
Of the 3 senatorial districts in the state, it is only Oyo central that has not produced a christian senator despite large number of christians within the district.
The CYLF have the below extensive analysis carried out on this subject and below were the outcomes as far as representation of the senate from Oyo Central senatorial district from 1999 till date is concerned:
- Lekan Balogun 1999 – 2003 Muslim
- Teslim Kolawole Folarin 2003 – 2007 Muslim
- Teslim Kolawole Folarin 2007 – 2011
- Ayoade Adeseun 2011 – 2015 Muslim
- Monsurat Sunmonu 2015 – 2019 Muslim
- Teslim Kolawole Folarin 2019 till date
From the above analysis, it is obvious that a christian has not been favoured in this representation. It is high time this be considered as we approach 2023 to have a balance in the scheme of things.
The good people of Oyo central senatorial district and by extension Oyo state are religious tolerant and it is believed that 2023 will shape things and any christian aspirant(s) with integrity, loyalty and history be considered for the position across the senatorial districts of Oyo state.
