Akinyele Youth Forum Applauds OYHA’s Motion on Estimated Billing, Urges IBEDC to Prioritise Consumers’ Welfare

In what appears to be a resounding victory for consumer rights, the Oyo State House of Assembly (OYHA) has taken a bold step towards addressing the contentious issue of estimated billing, earning commendation from the Akinyele Youth Forum (AYF) for championing the cause of the people.

The motion, seconded by the lawmaker representing Ibadan South West State Constituency One and Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Yusuf Adebisi, resonated with the grievances of countless consumers burdened by what they perceive as a fraudulent billing system. During the plenary session, Hon. Adebisi underscored the urgency of rectifying the situation, emphasising the need for accurate billing through the widespread distribution of prepaid metres.

In a statement released through his verified social media platform following the session, Hon. Adebisi shared his support for the motion, stating, “I supported a motion raised by my esteemed colleague, Honourable Babalola, during the plenary session at the Oyo State House of Assembly. The motion addressed the issue of estimated billing, which consumers perceive as a fraudulent system, as they are compelled to pay for electricity they did not consume.”

The AYF, a pro-people organisation dedicated to advocating for the welfare of youth, entire indigenes, and residents in Akinyele Local Government, hailed the OYHA’s proactive stance on the matter.

Speaking on behalf of the forum, AYF President, Mr. Paul Adegoke emphasised the significance of the motion, stating, “This is an agenda we have relentlessly pursued, and seeing it resonate within the chambers of the Oyo State House of Assembly reaffirms our commitment to the cause.”

The AYF further extended its appreciation to all parliamentarians in the Oyo State House of Assembly for their dedication to addressing the concerns of consumers. Additionally, the Forum called upon the legislators representing Akinyele Local Government, Hon. Olalekan Monsuru Abiola from Constituency-I and Hon. (Deacon) Olatunde Kehinde from Constituency-II, to throw their full support behind the motion and work towards its successful implementation.

Mr. Adegoke shed light on the ongoing efforts of the AYF through the Akinyele Youth Electricity Intervention Movement, aimed at tackling the challenges faced by residents in the local government area. These challenges include, but are not limited to, arbitrary estimated billing, erratic electricity supply, and perceived exploitation by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

With the support of the Oyo State House of Assembly and the unwavering determination of organisations like the AYF, there is renewed hope for a fair and equitable resolution to the longstanding issue of estimated billing. As pressure mounts on stakeholders to prioritize the welfare of consumers, the stage is set for meaningful reform in the energy sector, ensuring that the rights and interests of the people remain paramount.
