Anthony Joshua’s Car Crash:Alalade Calls for Immediate Enforcement of Speed Limits, Crackdown on Illegal Parking

Alalade Calls for Immediate Enforcement of Speed Limits, Crackdown on Illegal Parking following Lagos–Ibadan Expressway Crash Involving Anthony Joshua

In the wake of a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that left two people dead and British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua hospitalised with minor injuries, public affairs commentator and renowned politician Ademola Alalade has renewed calls for more urgent enforcement of speed limits and stricter regulation of illegal roadside parking on Nigeria’s major highways.

The crash, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, near the Sinoma/Makun axis of the busy Lagos /Ibadan  expressway in Ogun State, involved a Lexus SUV in which Joshua and his associates were travelling.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the vehicle lost control during an overtaking maneuver at excessive speed and collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside — a scenario traffic officials say is symptomatic of weak enforcement of highway safety regulations.

Two occupants in the vehicle — identified in multiple reports as close friends, trainers or aides of Joshua — tragically died at the scene, while others, including the renowned boxers driver were taken to hospital.

Alalade and emergency responders have described the incident as yet another reminder of the deadly consequences of speeding and hazardous parking practices on Nigeria’s road corridors.

Reacting to the incident, Alalade emphasised that without consistent enforcement of speed limits and decisive action against illegal parking — particularly by heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles along high-traffic routes — similar tragedies will continue to occur. He further urged the FRSC, Nigeria Police Force, state governments, and other relevant agencies to coordinate more effectively in implementing traffic laws, deploy adequate patrols, and ensure that offending vehicles do not endanger motorists and commuters. Alalade while appealing to government to deploy technology to monitor reckless driving through the installation of speed cameras also appealed to drivers to exercise greater personal responsibility and adhere strictly to traffic regulations for the safety of all road users.

The FRSC has reiterated warnings that speeding, wrongful overtaking, and disregard for road safety rules are among the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways and continues to advocate for improved compliance and enforcement across the country’s major transport corridors.
