Birthday: Our Imam is 60! – Prof Adeolu Akande Greets Prof Taofeek Azeez.
Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC), Professor Adeolu Akande has felicitated with the Chief Imam of University of Abuja, Professor Taofeek Azeez over his this year birthday celebration.
This is contained in birthday message issued by Prof Akande to celebrate Prof Azeez, which was obtained by this Newspaper, Africano Trumpeters.
The full birthday message reads;”He returned from the North to enrol at Anwar Ul Islam High School,Iseyin in 1976. He returned every good gesture with the Hausa word “Nagode” and in no time the Hausa word became his alias in the school.
He was arguably the best student in English Language in the 1981 set of the school and had the reputation of writing flawless essays in which the English Language teacher found nothing to correct. Lively and hilarious,Taofeek Azeez was the life of every circle he belonged.
I had the privilege of sharing a room with him and Ahmed Raji,now Ahmed Raji SAN at the Asiko Laiye Villa on Ondo Road during our days at the defunct Oyo State College of Arts and Science, Ile Ife.
He had always been an active member of the Muslims Students Movement from secondary school but got deeper into religion at OSCAS. If my memory does not fail me, he became the President of the Muslim Society of Nigeria in OSCAS, going on to head the same organisation at the University of Ibadan.
Professor Azeez is not only religious. He is a humanist , ever looking out for and working for the entronement of a better society for all. Brilliant and hardworking, he became Professor of English Language at the University of Abuja and Chief Imam of the university. Not a small feat for my brother from Iseyin.”
