Five Things You Should Know About Kenyan Writer, Ngugi wa Thiong’o As He Turns 85
Legendary Kenyan writer, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, turned 85 on Thursday (today).
He is regarded as one of Africa’s greatest living writers whose writing examines the legacy of colonialism and more.
Here are five things to know about the Kenyan writer:
- Thiong’o published his first novel, ‘Weep Not, Child’ in 1964.
- He received educational degrees from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda in 1963 and from Leeds University, Yorkshire, England, in 1964.
- He also wrote his novels in the Gikuyu language.
- Thiong’o is a professor of Comparative Literature and English at the University of California, Irvine in America.
- According to UCI Libraries, Thiong’o works have been translated into more than 30 languages.
