Former Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has paid tribute to the late erudite Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abdulwahab Banni Afonta.
In a heartfelt tribute, the immediate past Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Aregbesola expressed his condolences on the demise of Sheikh Banni Afonta, an esteemed Islamic scholar.
Ogbeni Aregbesola conveyed his condolences, stating, “I join the family, students, friends, followers, admirers, and the Muslim Ummah in Osogbo and the South West to mourn the transition of Sheikh Abdulwahab Banni Afonta.
Describing Sheikh Afonta as a consummate Islamic scholar, preacher, and fervent advocate for social justice, Ogbeni Aregbesola acknowledged the late scholar’s integral role in the Osun Renaissance movement. He remarked, “He was steadfast with us till his transition.”
Reflecting on the bittersweet nature of life, Ogbeni Aregbesola emphasised the pain of departures and losses while expressing nostalgia for Sheikh Afonta’s character. He noted, “The Sheikh has left our realm to the higher station, and the unending paradox of life prevails.
While concluding, Ogbeni Aregbesola urged prayers for Sheikh Afonta’s elevated station in Jannah, strength for the grieving family, and the ability to carry forward the scholar’s works and legacy. The tribute concluded with dua for the deceased,Inna Lilahi Wa Inna Illahi Rajiun,” signifying a return to Allah and acceptance of fate.
