Genuine Commitment, Strict Adherence to Regulations and Safety Measures, Critical Actions to Avoid and Manage Disasters – Senator Akintunde Urges Stakeholders
With sincere concern and commitment towards avoiding the constant occurrence of the kind of explosion attributed to human errors that recently occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, strict compliance with regulations and safety measures guiding operations within the various sectors of the economy are major factors that must be emphasised.
This was noted by Dr. Yunus Akintunde in a release on his behalf by Kunle Olatunji, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Distinguished Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District at the Senate in Abuja.
“I felt so sad and uncomfortable to observe that the occurrence of that magnitude of explosion recently in Ibadan was attributed to human errors and negligence by individuals who did not comply with established regulations and safety measures in their operations.
While receiving notifications of commiserations from several visitors at his personal residence in Bodija Ibadan, which coincidentally is located within the vicinity of the area where the sad incidence occurred, with damages that were minimal to his personal property as well, Senator Akintunde observed from the first-hand reports by the team of his legislative aides who visited the site that the incidence was avoidable if all stakeholders responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations of activities and strict adherence to safety measures had done the needful.
“Without prejudices and not being judgemental or unnecessarily sentimental on sensitive issues of this nature, while also calming nerves and commiserating with ourselves collectively, it has become imperative that we should all be concerned about the urgent need to constantly ensure implementation of guidelines, rules, and regulations on every aspect of our operations while we also uphold best practices on standards and measures, especially in critical sectors such as mining, manufacturing, exploration, construction, energy, and the environment, among others.
Senator Akintunde also advised that government regulatory agencies should be more committed and proactive in their operations while upholding sanctions and preventive measures without sparing any erring organisation or individual who by nature will always find loopholes and measures around issues without minding the consequences of such actions of deliberate negligence on the overall interest of society.
“Imagine the trails of woes and agonies over the sad incidence; we all have families and friends who are worst hit by the incidence where lives and properties were lost. Sadly though, avoidable, but for human error and negligence.
“I am sincerely impressed by the account of quick interventions and responses of various agencies on disaster management at the federal and state government levels, religious bodies, corporate organisations, traditional rulers, notable individuals, and concerned citizens who have visited the scene of the incidence and have shown concern and commitment to provide assistance.
“I like to seize this opportunity to thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has reached out to the Oyo State Government under Eng. Seyi Makinde to commiserate with the people of Oyo State generally, in particular the indigenes of Ibadan City and especially families that were affected by the explosion disaster.”
“It is noteworthy that the President himself expressed displeasure about the circumstances surrounding the disaster, sharing the same sentiment on the possibility of avoiding such a situation and its occurrence.
While being hopeful that those responsible for the dastardly act of negligence will be apprehended and made to face the wrath of law, let us all as critical stakeholders live up to expectations to uphold the commitment to the regulations and safety measures and procedures in our human operation interfaces and enjoy the benefits of quality living, managing disasters with ease, almost seemingly effortlessly, except when such are acts of God, natural and almost unavoidable.”
“As an expert in energy and environmental issues, I can also establish the possibility of effective management of any kind of disaster caused by nature or human error when we are proactive and sensitive to proper planning and effective monitoring of every aspect of our operations as responsible humans.”
Dr. Yunus Akintunde then prayed that God will grant the departed souls peace and rest while the grace for comfort in divine benevolence will abide with the rest of us living beings, giving us the fortitude to bear the loss of lives and properties as a result of the sad incidence.
