‘Gov Makinde Got N30Bn, Remaining N20Bn Withheld’: Group Charges Makinde on Integrity, Questions Gov’s Handling of ‘N50 Billion Bodija Explosion Relief Fund’

A civic group has raised serious concerns regarding the accountability and integrity of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration in light of recent allegations surrounding the N50 billion relief fund meant for victims of the Bodija explosion.
As Comrade Femi Awogboro asserts, “The truth has a way of emerging,” underscoring the importance of transparency in public governance.
Following a challenge from Governor Makinde to former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, demanding evidence regarding the handling of federal relief funds, Fayose has now presented what he claims to be documentary proof of federal disbursement. This action has escalated the issue beyond mere political discourse into a critical matter of public accountability.

Awogboro insists that the Oyo State Government can no longer afford to remain silent or offer half-hearted responses. This situation transcends personal rivalries; it hinges on the moral obligation to the victims whose lives have been irrevocably impacted by the Bodija tragedy.

While aides to Governor Makinde confirm the receipt of N30 billion from the Federal Government, the governor has yet to provide a comprehensive public accounting. Reports indicate that only about N4.5 billion has been distributed to victims, raising troubling questions regarding the remaining N25.5 billion.
Awogboro emphasizes, “This is the pivotal question: If N30 billion was received, where is the remaining amount?” Vague statements or dismissive responses will not suffice in addressing the citizens’ demand for clarity.
The matter now extends beyond allegations of mismanagement. It involves fundamental questions of accountability, transparency, and the public’s trust. The citizens of Oyo State deserve a detailed and verifiable account outlining:”The total amount received; The date of receipt; The expenditures made; and the rationale behind the minimal disbursement to victims
Awogboro warned that continued silence or evasive communication could heighten public suspicion and further undermine trust in the administration, leading to disappointment among citizens who anticipated a higher standard of leadership.
Governor Makinde has built his reputation on promises of transparency and fiscal responsibility. This juncture represents a defining test of that commitment. The responsible course of action is for the governor to address the public directly, publish all relevant records, and provide thorough closure to this matter.
Failure to do so risks exacerbating doubts and reinforcing the disillusionment felt by the community.
“True leadership is not merely about countering criticism; it is about being accountable to the people”, As Awogboro.
