JUST-IN: UNILAG Slashes Fees after NANS Meeting with VC
In a significant development, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced a reduction in its fees following a crucial meeting between the institution’s management and representatives from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). This groundbreaking decision was unveiled in a statement released on Friday morning.
According to the statement, UNILAG’s leadership convened a meeting on Thursday evening with the President of NANS, Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, accompanied by key NANS officials and faculty leaders from nine different faculties, including the College of Medicine.
During the meeting, Comrade Usman Umar Barambu presented the students’ demands, which included three major requests: the reversal of obligatory fees, the rollback of hostel fees, and the reinstatement of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at UNILAG.
The move comes as a response to mounting pressure from students who have long advocated for these changes. The reduction in fees is expected to ease the financial burden on students and make higher education more accessible to a broader range of students.
UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, expressed her commitment to addressing these concerns and working collaboratively with NANS and other stakeholders to improve the overall educational experience at the institution. She praised the students for their activism and their constructive approach to negotiations.
In the wake of this decision, students at UNILAG have expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting and have lauded the university’s administration for taking steps to prioritize students’ welfare. This development is seen as a positive step forward in the ongoing efforts to enhance the affordability and quality of education in Nigeria.
