Kudos on Anti-Social Vices Initiative; Please , Prioritize Food Security for Students – Oyo APC Stalwart, Hon Afeez Bello Mabinuori Writes Presidency.
The standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Ward 2 area of Ibadan North Local Government, in the forthcoming local government elections in Oyo State, Honourable Afeez Bello ‘Mabinuori’ has commended the President and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the creation of a special committee on campaign against social vices in tertiary institutions through his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Student Engagement, Comrade Sunday Asefon.
Mabinuori hailed the President and SSA on this initiative that is set to eradicate social vices in tertiary institutions across the country. “This is a welcome development, but it needs a solid and better foundation in order to make it a lasting success. The setting up of the special committee is like setting the standard for the safety and security of the students, which is highly commendable; this initiative should be tagged as “collective security of the students in tertiary institutions’. This initiative called for the efforts on collective security in order to address social vices in tertiary institutions.
Bello noted that “in order to ensure the safety and security of the students, there must be some measures put in place. To achieve success in this initiative, the process should be categorised into two, namely, food security and human (student) security.
“The creation of the special committee has, however, shown that the initiative of the presidency lays emphasis only on human security. It is important to point out the fact that the latter would fail woefully without putting the former into practice.
“Once success is achieved on food security for all students, human security would be easily achieved since one of the problems that brought about these unwanted social vices is that hunger is on the land and it has pushed some students to join bad groups that were initiating them to all numerous vices in our tertiary institutions; most of them have been enticed by the three basic needs of man: food, clothing, and shelter. The members of these groups provide accommodations for some of them; they clothe them in order to change their lifestyles; most times, they change their place of living in order to keep them away from the public.
“Food security for the student should be the groundwork of this initiative since it would not only enhance academic performance and personal development of students but also have positive impacts in their lives; it would also drastically reduce cybercrime, drug abuse, cultism, academic dishonesty, etc. This would help the committee easily achieve success in the assignment given to them.
“Mr. President, the process of eradicating social vices should not be limited to tertiary institutions but spreading and stretching out the process to our secondary and primary schools since these acts have spread across all institutions in our society, and the government needs to take a bold step to curb them”, he submitted.
