Malcolm: Never Forgotten – Steel Pulse Remembers Late Afrocentrist 57 Years After

Today has been 57 years since Malik El Shabazz, aka Malcolm X – was shot down in cold blood on a cold winterβs day in Haarlem NY; and it was almost exactly a year ago to the day when he was cheering on the legendary Muhammad Ali winning his first fight against the invincible, Sonny Liston.
But not many people are aware that nine days prior to Malcolmβs assassination he was actually walking the streets of Steel Pulseβs neighbourhood, in England. Apparently, he was invited over by an Asian committee to help fight the injustices of minorities being denied housing in a then, βWhite district.β
Within days of arriving back home, in Queens, NY, Malcolmβs abode was fire bombed. He and his wife, Betty, had to grab their 4 little girls and stand out in the frost bitten streets, watching their house burn to the cinders. History tells the rest. He was gunned down a week later.
But what is interesting to know, is that Malcolm never got the accolades or the βbig upsβ like Martin Luther King. As a matter of fact if we had left it to the social media representation of society, his name would not even be mentioned at all. Thanks to the Black History Month celebrations over the years that we are able to keep that energy of this amazing individual still at the forefront of our minds and hearts. There has been documentary upon documentary on the political life of Malcolm in recent years, all of which have depicted an excellent insight of his goals, dreams and ideals. All worth watching.
βWho Killed Malcolm X,β directed by Abdur-Rahman Muhammad and βBlood Brothers,β by Marcus A. Clarke. Both documentaries are unique in the way that they feature hours and hours of never seen before footage of Malcolm. And to see these documentaries one after the other, gives one a sense of understanding how prophetic Malcolm X was, especially, in context to what is going on in this divided world of ours, right now.
And a big up to Spike Lee who was the catalyst to all this with his amazing film βMalcolm X, β which celebrates the 30th anniversary since its release, this year.
Leaving you with a quote from Malcolm X,
βA Man That Stands For Nothing Will Fall For Anythingβ¦β
A shout out to his family.. you have a father to be proud of – eternally.
