Morocco re-elected to head African union of mutual benefit societies

Brahim El Othmani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Mutual Fund for Public Administration Employees of Morocco (MGPAP), was unanimously re-elected for a second term as President of the African Union of Mutual Societies (UAM), apanews.net reported.
El Othmani’s re-election took place on Wednesday, December 10, in Rabat, at the conclusion of the 5th General Assembly of the African Confederation of Mutual Societies.
Members of the Union commended the achievements of the previous term, including the implementation of joint projects, the sector’s strengthened presence in regional and international bodies, the expansion of South-South cooperation, and the reinforcement of partnerships aimed at supporting the mutual system in Africa.

El-Othmani reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the continental strategy for mutualism. He noted that the UAM aligns fully with Morocco’s African vision of cooperation and shared development, enriching its experience in universal health coverage and strengthening its position in African debates on social protection and sustainable development.

The 5th General Assembly focused on reviewing the progress report of the UAM’s 2022-2025 strategic plan, alongside activity and financial reports.
Under the theme “Strategic Planning 2027-2030: Vision, Objectives and Priorities of the UAM,” the meeting presented the outlines of the new strategic plan, which aims to further strengthen social protection and expand access to health coverage across the African continent.
The meeting also approved the admission of new members from organisations in Morocco, Niger, Gabon, Chad, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tunisia, and renewed the Union’s governing bodies. The new executive board includes representatives from Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Burundi, Tunisia, and Chad.
The UAM, chaired by the MGPAP, was created in 2007 to promote cooperation and solidarity among African mutual societies, leveraging technical expertise to improve social coverage and healthcare access. Brahim El Othmani was previously elected President of the World Union of Mutual Societies (WUM) in June 2024.
