NANS President, Asefon Visits New NDLEA Chair, Marwa, Congratulates Him, Advocates Students, Workers, Drivers, NYSC Members’ Rights.

National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) delegates led by her Revolutionary President, Asefon Sunday has paid an advocacy visit to the new Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Muhammad Buba Marwa in his office yesterday to congratulate him on his appointment and engage him on the agency’s proposed drug test policy for tertiary institution students, workers, drivers and NYSC members.

“While NANS under my watch endorses the policy and consider it a giant step in curbing the menace of drug abuse among students, the endorsement is however conditional. The condition is that such test must be 100% at the expense of the government. We are supporting the policy with the understanding that our students will not be made to pay a dime for the test under any guise.

“All well-meaning Nigerians irrespective of political party affiliation, ethnicity, religion or creed must join hands to end the scourge of drug abuse by young people and NANS will actively participate in this campaign.

“During the visit, I also suggested to the leadership of NDLEA to initiate NDLEA as campus-based clubs or campus-based para-military organization just like Cadet, Man ‘O’ War, Road Safety Marshal Corps etc. I believe this will go a long way in reducing drug and substance abuse on our campuses and improve scholarship, research and innovations as our bright minds will be committed to academics and research without distraction from the negative effects of drugs.

“However, the drug test must be extended to political office holders both in the legislature and the executive to be sure that those saddled with the responsibility of formulating our policies and programs are not doing that under the influence of drugs.

“We will collaborate with NDLEA as we plead with all Nigerian students both home and in the diaspora to shun drug abuse.

Asefon Sunday,
Revolutionary NANS President.
