NANS Hails JAMB for Waiving Registration Fees for Physically Challenged Candidates in 2024 UTME

In a groundbreaking move, the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has received accolades from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for approving free registration for persons living with disabilities (PLWD) in the upcoming 2024/2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The President of NANS, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, GCNS, expressed deep gratitude to the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, for the remarkable gesture, describing it as an unprecedented step in the nation’s educational history.

In a statement, Comrade Emonefe commended the JAMB Registrar as a father and brother, highlighting the magnanimity of providing free registration at a time of economic challenges.

“This is an unusual wave in the educational history of Nigeria for a government agency or ministry to offer such. Even at this time of economic hardship, it is a gesticulation in the right direction and is worthy of our praise and applause,” Emonefe stated.

The move ensured that PLWDs no longer face financial barriers to participating in the UTME, marking a significant stride towards inclusivity in the education system. NANS emphasised the need for other stakeholders to emulate JAMB’s commitment to inclusivity, particularly considering the economic challenges stemming from global inflation.

Emonefe also acknowledged the ongoing transformations in the education sector under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, viewing the free registration for PLWD’s as an addendum to the promised renewed hope.

Emonefe expressed optimism that more developments and transformations awaited Nigerian students.

“On behalf of all Nigerian students, both in Nigeria and in the diaspora, I sincerely appreciate this gesture.” He stated this, underscoring the positive impact this decision would have on the educational landscape.

The move by JAMB sets a precedent for social inclusivity, reflecting a commitment to providing equal opportunities for all aspiring students.
