Nigeria: Defence Headquarters Denies Coup Attempt Rumours

‘Tunde Adeyemo,
Abuja, October 18, 2025.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has responded to a misleading report suggesting that the cancellation of events marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an alleged military coup attempt. The DHQ categorically refuted these claims, calling them false and malicious.

In a statement, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) clarified that the decision to cancel the anniversary parade was made to accommodate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s participation in a strategic bilateral meeting abroad. The DHQ emphasised that this decision also allows the AFN to maintain focus on ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

The DHQ also addressed the recent arrest of sixteen officers under investigation for professional misconduct, stating that these actions are part of a routine internal process aimed at upholding discipline and professionalism within the military ranks. An investigative panel has been established, and its findings will be made public.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, urged citizens to continue supporting security forces and to disregard the misinformation being spread by those seeking to sow discord. He reaffirmed the AFN’s loyalty to the Constitution and the Federal Government under President Tinubu’s leadership.

The DHQ reassured the public that both the government and military institutions are committed to the safety, development, and well-being of the nation, emphasising that democracy will endure.
