Nigeria: NASS, Executive United to Address Citizens’ Concerns, Revitalise Economy – Sen Yunus Akintunde

Economy and State of the Nation: National Assembly synergy with the Executive arm of Government is yielding results as citizens’ agitations will be thoroughly addressed: – Sen Yunus Akintunde.

The urgency of addressing the agitations of Nigerians on critical issues of the economy is on the front burners of a synergetic approach between the Executive and Legislative arms of government at the Federal level.

Dr Yunus Akintunde, the Distinguished Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District at the Senate in Abuja made this known in a release made available to the media by Kunle Olatunji, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity.

“No doubt, these are trying moments for our Nation, and all of us are feeling the pressure within the global economic context. Whoever says that all is well at this moment is either being deliberately untruthful, ignorant of realities, or both.

“However, within the hard realities of these hardships and challenges, several intervention programs, action plans as highlighted in the 2024 national budget and the emergency declaration on food security put in place by the Federal government will soon begin to yield positive results to reduce the pressure on our people”.

“These initiatives are joint efforts of constructive synergetic relationship between the Executive and Legislative arms of Government and we are confident that Government is sincerely concerned to ensure that the situation is brought under control within the shortest possible period without delay”.

“As Representatives of the people and in that capacity, we have a sacred responsibility to appreciate the pressure imposed by the various economic policies and actions of the government on the nation at large”.

“We must always escalate such assessment of the situation in our deliberations, to reflect in effective policy designs, programs, and action plans that will address the prevailing associated challenges however lofty and reasonable such policies might be in the overall national interest of our people”.

“It is equally important that citizens should be properly guided and well informed that those several initiatives and palliative packages that the Federal Government has put in place will certainly address the prevailing problems of food insecurity,  depreciating exchange value of Naira and the negative impact in unprecedented high cost of living, general national insecurity, unemployment, the negative inflationary trend among several other economic crises”.

“We must take into consideration the peculiarity of our local challenges amid the global crisis while solving our problems”

“As the representatives of the people within our constituency, we have a sacred responsibility to appreciate the pressure of the economy on our people and while escalating such challenges during our evaluation process and deliberations we need to be considerate in our appreciation of strategies and policy designs as being proposed by the executive arm of government for ratification by the National Assembly”.

Senator Akintunde further explained that the several initiatives and palliative packages that the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have put in place within the synergy between the National Assembly and other various stakeholders will certainly yield positive results as anticipated.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is real, purposeful with good and sincere intentions towards turning the fortunes of our Nation around”. Only individuals who can do a thorough and sincere assessment of issues from a perspective of our past experiences, the urgency and need for us to take radical and tough decisions necessary for sustainable development and growth will appreciate the sincerity of the present administration”.

He further observed that it is obvious that a couple of policies and programs of the government could have tough impacts with pressure on our lives at the initial stage, but in the long run, we will appreciate the importance and value addition of such critical policies in the overall interest of our national economic growth and development.

Senator Akintunde further explained that “as partners and critical stakeholders alongside the other arms of government, we must deliberately develop and encourage harmonious cohabitation without losing the values of separation of powers and check and balances in governance as entrenched in our constitution. This is what is obtainable in contemporary Nation State management”.

“We at the National Assembly shall remain steadfast and resolute at all times in the discharge of our duties. This we have often displayed when confronted with situations considered unfavorable to the interest of our people. A case study was when I moved a motion and achieved the passage of a bill against the increase of electricity tariff at the Senate. The Executive arm of government respected that decision and immediately dropped the idea”

“On our parts individually, we are supporting our people by creating opportunities for self-sustenance through human capacity development and skill acquisition programs,  community cooperative, employment opportunities, and direct work and service engagements of local constituents on projects, thus providing more tangible results with long term benefits to our people”

He was optimistic that within the shortest time and very soon assuredly, we shall emerge from the prevailing circumstances with strength, purpose, and determination as a united people driven by passion and collective commitments to experience a new order of a truly prosperous Nation of our dreams.

“We are sincerely committed to our people and also assure them of quality and responsive representation in governance at all times”.

“I like to equally call the attention of our elected and appointed leaders in government at all levels to be restrained on lifestyles that might suggest negative inclinations, but rather we should extend support, care, and affection with sincere empathy towards our fellow citizens at this critical moments.

“We cannot afford any form of distraction at this critical moments and process of nation-building which require unusual endurance with a strong determination to be positively inclined in our attitudes and perception while we exhibit absolute confidence and hope that all will be well with our Nation”, he concluded.
