Nigerian Student’s Death Sparks Demands for Justice and Global Protest”.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is calling on the Philippines government to swiftly identify and bring to justice those responsible for the tragic death of a Nigerian medical student known as Ikem. Ikem reportedly lost his life last Saturday in the Philippines, allegedly beaten by a group of Chinese restaurant workers in circumstances that remain unclear.

NANS strongly condemns this incident, expressing shock and sorrow on behalf of Nigerian students, both within the country and abroad. They consider this act of violence barbaric and deserving of international condemnation.

According to NANS, it is imperative that the Philippine government takes immediate action to apprehend Ikem’s assailants and ensures they face the full consequences of the law. They emphasize that the longstanding relationship between the Philippines and China should not impede the pursuit of justice for Ikem as an international student.

NANS warns that failure to hold the culprits accountable and ensure justice is served may lead to the escalation of the matter on an international level, potentially involving a global protest at the Philippine Embassy both in Nigeria and abroad. They stress the importance of protecting not only the lives and property of Philippine citizens but also those of other nationals residing in the country.

The statement by Akinteye, the Vice President on External Affairs of NANS, also calls upon the Nigerian Diaspora Commission and the National Assembly to intervene in this matter of Nigerian student’s death. Furthermore, they request the international community to unite in demanding justice for Ikem, believing this is crucial in preventing the recurrence of such barbaric incidents in the Philippines and globally.
