NISO Writes Power Minister, Gives Reasons for Generation Curtailment • All Hands on Deck Resolving the Issue – Adelabu’s Media Aide

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has written to the minister of power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, while giving reasons for generation curtailment due to gas constraints.
In a letter signed by the NISO’s managing director/CEO, Engr A. B. Mohammed, FNSE, and sighted by this newspaper, the organisation gave vandalisation and other related factors as reasons for the curtailment in generation capacity on the National Grid.
The letter reads, “Notification of Generation Curtailment Due to Gas Constraint! We hereby notify your office of the curtailment in generation capacity on the National Grid, which was due to a gas supply constraint caused by the reported vandalisation of one of the gas pipelines in the Oil and Gas Sector supply chain.

Consequently, power stations (e.g., Egbin G.S., Omotosho NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP, Olorunsogo Gas, Omotosho Gas, and Odukpani Gas, amongst others) were affected by either output reduction or complete shutdown, which in turn resulted in total unavailable generation capability of 2,464.2MW at 06:00hrs on 14 December 2025.

This incident necessitated the Grid Controller at the NISO National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo to promptly deploy contingency measures to preserve the stability, security, and reliability of the National Grid with dispatch of the Hydro Power Plants Units. This dispatch instruction served as intervention to respond to reduced generation caused by gas constraint to the thermal stations.
Furthermore, continuous generation re-dispatch was executed to balance available supply with System demand, while Voltage Support was provided through available Reactive Power absorption capability of generating Units, emergency load-shedding and other Power Conditioners.
Despite these measures, continuous monitoring of system frequency for demand-side management was implemented to maintain grid stability. However, there is a need for urgent action in order to avert this undesirable incident from extending to January/February which usually lead to grid instability.
The System Operator reaffirms its commitment to proactive grid management and the application of best – international practices to ensure a secure and reliable electricity supply for the nation. Please, accept our highest regards.

Comrade Femi Awogboro, media aide to the Minister of Power, Chief Adelabu, confirmed the receipt of a letter from NISO when contacted by our reporter. “Yes, it is true that NISO has reached out to the Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, who is actively addressing the matter. We expect not only stability but also significant improvements in the power supply.”
“I can assure you that all efforts are being made by the honourable minister of power to resolve the issue and ensure a reliable power supply for all citizens of Nigeria, now more than ever”, Awogboro hinted.
