Our Former Bursar, Late Pa Abraham Ogunmola JP, Led a Good Life of Emulation – Ag Poly Ibadan Bursar

Late Pa Abraham Olayiwola Akanmu Ogunmola JP was a detribalised Nigerian statesman known for his patriotism and extensive experience as a civil servant. He garnered immense respect at The Polytechnic Ibadan and its satellite campuses prior to their separation in 2013. His commitment to inclusivity, empowerment, and development made him a guiding light for the Bursary Department.
Pa Ogunmola’s dedication to the institution was evident as he defended it against various panels, including:
•Fatodun Visitation in 1986
•Justice Aderemi Visitation Panel in 1995
•Justice Ayinde Judicial Enquiry in 1996
•Prof. Adedoja Visitation Panel in 2000
•Justice Olakanmi Panel in 2000 and the committee on Financial and Labour Salary Scale Hatiss in 2010

It is noteworthy that the late bursar meticulously maintained records, ensuring that the institution was not financially indicted, a testament to his impeccable reputation.

Pa Ogunmola held several significant roles throughout his career, including Acting Chief Internal Auditor from 1983 to 1984 and Acting Bursar from 1985 to 1987 and again from 1989 to 1991. He was appointed as the Substantive Bursar in 1991 by Governor Abdulkarim Adisa eventually retiring on May 26, 2003.
Born on July 3, 1937, in Oyo Town, Oyo West Local Government Area of Oyo State, Pa Ogunmola laid a strong educational foundation for himself. Instead of following a conventional career path, he embraced entrepreneurship early on, later transitioning into civil service and teaching. His business acumen and determination distinguished him as one of the most successful young civil servants in the Bursary Department and beyond.
In the early 1960s, Pa Ogunmola expanded his entrepreneurial ventures into the farming industry, establishing himself as a prominent dealer in Southwest Nigeria. His business operations spanned the trade routes of Oyo, Lagos, Ikire, Iseyin, and Ogun State, making him a key player in regional agricultural importation. His contributions to both business and civil service set a remarkable example.
During his tenure, Pa Ogunmola also served in the Accounts Department of the Western Nigeria Development Corporation (WNDC). He was a pragmatic leader whose extensive experience in civil service and public administration distinguished him as an ideal servant and executive figure. His profound understanding of resource management and strategic planning, along with a strong network of political and business associates, positioned him as a capable leader for driving meaningful development at the Bursary Department and The Polytechnic Ibadan.
With a proven track record in leadership within the Bursary Department, Pa Ogunmola embodied the qualities essential for effective administration. His expertise in resource mobilisation and utilisation was crucial in translating accounting policies into real benefits for the staff and students at The Polytechnic Ibadan. His ability to navigate challenges and implement strategic policies made him well-suited for a role where efficiency, accountability, and innovation were paramount.
In a leadership environment that demands experience, resilience, and foresight, Pa Ogunmola’s background and acumen made him a compelling choice for higher responsibilities. As the Bursary Department continues to pursue strong and visionary leadership, he remains a symbol of experience, stability, and progress. His journey from a young entrepreneur to a key bursar exemplifies the power of hard work, perseverance, and selfless service.

He accepted Jesus as his personal saviour, was a devoted tither, and contributed to various church activities. Known for his humility, he held pastors in high esteem and served as a great pillar in the Ogunmola family.
At 7:38 PM on Monday, August 10, 2015, he graciously departed this life, surrounded by his family.
