Oyo North Senatorial Election: Why BAF Again? !! By Barr Abdul-Waheed Lawal.
The Reelection of Sen Buhari is very strategic and important to Oyo State and the entire South West.
We have gotten to up our political game.
Three ranking senators from the South West are leaving the Senate and are not coming back.
Senators : Oluremi Tinubu, Teslim Folarin and Ajayi Boroface.
What are we doing to find a replacement for them?
The chances are foreclosed in all the states of the South West except Oyo State.
The possible state that would have also produced a ranking senator is Ogun State, with Senator Amosun, but he is not recontesting. So, we are left only with Oyo North in Oyo State where Sen Buhari is contesting for the 3rd time.
And you know that only a senator elected for the 3rd term is considered a ranking senator.
If you voted for Senator Buhari in 2023, he has automatically become a ranking senator.
By the House Rules, certain privileges and priorities are reserved for the ranking senators just like in the military and legal professions.
No matter how brilliant you are as a lawyer, you can’t enjoy some rights and privileges unless you are a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
If we loved Tinubu and we will vote for him, we must vote for National Assembly members of his party for him to succeed. The president needs Executive/Legislative Synergy for Smooth Passage of Budgets, Complimentary Motions that will ensure proper oversight functions over govt departments and agencies. We must be careful of voting candidates that will convert the national assembly into opposition against incoming President Tinubu. If we did so it will either slow down or completely frustrate his Administration. The lesson of the National Assembly under Saraki should not be lost. A senator from a minority party can’t achieve much.
Just look at it, how can’t the whole south west be without a ranking senator? If you were Tinubu, if the Ranking Senators are meeting Tinubu but there is no one from the South West amongst them? Perhaps, we don’t know the influence of ranking senators.
My sincere advice to Oyo North, particularly, Okeogun is to engage Sen Buhari and then give him their massive votes instead of them to waste their votes by electing another senator who will start from the scratch in 2023. The North and other parts who have been reelecting some of their senators know what they are doing.
Let me add that with the way Okeogun changes even their House of Representatives member every 4 years, Okeogun will not be able to produce the Speaker of the House of Representatives until the second coming of Jesus Christ.
