Oyo State IAWPA Director, Amb Alongbija Urges Govt to Address ‘Hardship’, Salutes Nigerians’ Patriotism

Oyo State IAWPA Director, Amb Alongbija Urges Govt to Address ‘Hardship’, Salutes Nigerians’ Patriotism.

The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) has appealed to Nigerians to resist temptation, or inducement, to engage in unpatriotic acts that could cause chaos, distress, and instability in Nigeria.

IAWPA pointed out that truncation of peaceful coexistence is counterproductive and a great disservice to humanity and the country, thus the imperative to be cautious, orderly, and patriotic even in the face of provocation and austerity, as there could be no development in an atmosphere of strife.

This advice is important against the backdrop of protests against the current unintended outcome of fuel subsidy removal by the federal government, which led to hardships and inflation.

Oyo State Director of IAWPA, Ambassador Muhammed-Lawal Musa Alongbija, who made the appeal in a statement in Ibadan, confirms that peaceful protest against government policies is an inalienable and guaranteed human right under a democratic dispensation but opines that such a right should be exercised within the ambit of the law to forestall the untoward consequences of violent and unorganised mass rallies.

“It is evident that there is severe economic hardship in the land. Nigerians must be wary of the antics of those who benefit from chaotic situations; peaceful and well-organised protests are potent civil means to draw the attention of the government to our daily existential challenges and pains, Alongbija advised.

On a court ruling that ordered the federal government to fix the prices of goods and services so as to address hyperinflation, Ambassador Alongbija urged the government to expedite actions towards reversing the skyrocketing prices of commodities for a decent and good standard of living for average Nigerians.

According to Ambassador Alongbija,”President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a listening leader, and his swift directive for the release of 102,000 metric tonnes of rice and other grains to Nigerians from the National Food Reserve and the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria to resolve the surging food crisis is a commendable initiative. The President should also direct a trickle-down approach to ensure the food items reach the target beneficiaries.”.

Ambassador Alongbija also acknowledged Governor Seyi Makinde’s efforts to mitigate the effects of economic hardship being experienced by residents through various initiatives under the Oyo State government’s Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER), noting that the disbursement of loans to farmers would boost food crop production.

The IAWPA Director in Oyo State advised the federal government to faithfully fulfil its promise to the Nigerian workers with a view to averting looming nationwide industrial action, as he maintained that a strike is an ill wind that does no one any good.

In the same vein, Ambassador Alongbija called on organised labour to be magnanimous whenever there is a roundtable discussion to promote industrial peace.
