PHOTOS: Lead City’s 3rd Faculty Lecture Addresses Roles of Communication, Economic Recovery

The Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (FCIS), Lead City University (LCU), has, on Thursday, June 6, 2024, organised its 3rd Faculty Lecture at the International Conference Centre of the university, Toll-Gate Area, Off Oba Otudeko Ave., in Ibadan.

Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, who was the guest speaker and Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Oyo State, while delivering the lecture, analysed a distressed economy as a state of extreme sorrow, suffering, or danger, characterised by economic decline, high poverty rates, unemployment, and inflation.

Olatunbosun observed the danger of misinformation to the credibility and acceptability of a leader and his policies. He expressed that professionally handled information is more important at this particular period in the country because of the hunger-induced anger among the people, and he noted that proper research towards knowing the needs of the people is crucial to public information management by the government. “We need competent communication experts, regular research, opinion polls, and accessible leadership to address the distressed economy that Nigeria is currently witnessing.

Dr. Olatunbosun lauded the administrative acumen of Governor Seyi Makinde, which he noted relied on science, logic, and data in relating with the people of Oyo State.

Olatunbosun also commended the Oyo State government’s efforts in strengthening security, improving the standard of living, encouraging investments, and boosting the economy of the state.

Earlier, in his opening remarks during the faculty lecture, Prof. Kabiru A. Adeyemo, the Vice Chancellor of the LCU, observed that the faculty lecture was part of the town and gown relationship to proffer sustainable solutions to societal challenges.

Also, in his welcome remarks, Prof. Lukman A. Abioye emphasised the importance of the efficient information dissemination mechanism to a functional system, either government or organization. He noted that synergizing information and communication for total economic development in a distressed economy involves leveraging technology, data, and communication channels to facilitate the goals of government. 

The event was graced by the principal staff and students of Lead City University, management representatives of other universities, management staff of the Oyo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, as well as the friends of the university, associates of the guest lecturer among others.
