President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the Nigerian National Honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Microsoft co-founder and renowned philanthropist Bill Gates.
The investiture took place at the president’s private residence in Lagos on Tuesday night.
According to President Tinubu, the honour was conferred in recognition of Gates’ decades-long commitment to improving lives through interventions in global health, polio eradication, education, digital innovation, and agricultural development, particularly in Nigeria and across Africa.

Gates’ contributions have saved millions of lives through the Gates Foundation and other initiatives, uplifted communities, and inspired global action.

President Tinubu and Gates had meaningful conversations on deepening their collaboration in health systems, innovation, and youth development. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared belief that real progress begins when people are invested in. The president emphasised Nigeria’s openness to ideas, partnerships, and actions that drive humanity forward.
The Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) is Nigeria’s third-highest national honour, awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the country’s development and progress. Gates has maintained a strong engagement with Nigeria for nearly two decades, with his foundation investing in initiatives spanning polio eradication, agricultural development, and health system strengthening.
