Protest: FCC Commissioner, Olowofela Urges Nigerians to Give Tinubu’s Administration More Time
The Federal Character Commissioner (FCC) from Oyo State, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, has called on Nigerians to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration more time before staging the hunger protest scheduled for tomorrow.
Olowofela, who previously served as the chairman of Ido Local Government and Oyo State Commissioner for Education, in a statement issued on Tuesday, emphasised that the current administration has been in power for just over a year, or less than 30 percent of its four-year term.
“How can you honestly and justifiably assess a government that has not spent 50% of its tenure?” he questioned.
“He also noted that many Nigerians considering the protest did not participate in the 2023 presidential election, either by failing to register or vote.
According to him, these individuals “deserved any type of government, good or bad,” as they did not exercise their democratic rights.
“The APC chieftain further argued that the combined votes of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) candidates who lost the election do not provide them with the “moral right” to protest.
He suggested that critics should wait until 2027 to challenge the administration or form a “shadow government” to hold it accountable.
Acknowledging the widespread hunger and economic challenges, Olowofela urged Nigerians to view the protest as a “clarion call” for the government to prioritize policies addressing these issues. Nonetheless, he appealed for more time for the administration to tackle the country’s problems.
