Public Figure: Let’s Meet Oyo Central APC Senatorial Candidate, Dr Yunus Akintunde.

Our this week “Public Figure And African Hero of People” is an illustrious son of Oyo town, and seasoned administrator. He is an astute politician with heavy credentials. He is a clearheaded statesman who truly exemplifies Yoruba Omoluabi ethos, and he is a true lover of people. Of course, he is a capable and capacious philosopher king, and an also integrous personality and charismatic leader of all times. His name is “Yunus Akintunde”.

Let’s Meet Dr Yunus Akintunde.

Dr Yunus Abiodun Akintunde was born on the 6th of March, 1962 in the ancient town of Oyo, Oyo State. He started his education career at the Ansar-Ud-Deen Model Primary School, Balogun Oyo town in 1968 and obtained the Primary school Leaving Certificate in 1973. Thereafter, he proceeded to Oranyan Grammar School, Oyo where he obtained the West African Examination Council (WASC) Certificate in 1980. Given his penchant for education, Dr Akintunde proceeded to The Polytechnic, lbadan and obtained the Ordinary National Diploma Certificate in Physics (with Electronics). He was later admitted to the Lagos State University to study Physics. He obtained the BSc. (Hon) Physics in 1990. In pursuit of a rich higher education, he obtained Masters of Pubic Administration (MPA) in 2007 from the same UniversIty. The drive for additional knowledge in the field of energy led Yunus Akintunde to acquire an M.Sc. degree in Energy Studies (Energy and Environment) in 2014 at the Department of Minerals, Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law (DMPEEL), Faculty of Multicdiscipinary Studies and capped it with a Doctorate Degree in Energy Studies (Energy and Environment) in 2018 from the same department.

As a grassroot personality, Akintunde’s love for his people is legendary, for which he has been rewarded with a number of political appointments. Dr. Akintunde served as the Commissioner, Oyo State, Civil Service Commission between 1999 and 2003 and also the Commissioner of Works and Transport, Oyo State between August 2011 and November 2012. In addition, he served as the Executive Assistant to the Governor of Oyo State between April 2014 and April 2015. He is currently the team Lead/Chief
Executive Officer, Trade Codes Ltd, (Energy & Environmental Consultancy Services) from 2002 to date.

Dr. Akintunde is an avid reader who believes in human capital and self-development. He has participated in local and international workshops, conferences and seminars. Some of these include Transforming Transportation in Sub Sahara Africa, World Bank Office, Washington DC, United States; Energy and The Economy, New York, United
States, The Greater London Business Conference on Nigeria, Mount Pleasant, London; Energy Economy and Climate change (international Association for Energy Economics), Dubai, UAE, Energy Resources Management in a Federal system, Sheraton Hotels, Lagos, Nigeria; Energy Access for Economic Development (National Association for Energy Economics), Sheratons Hotels and Towers, Abuja, FCT, Nigeria; the Oil and Gas in the Gulf of Guinea Conference (Centre for Petroleum Economics, Energy and Law), International Conference Centre, University of lbadan, Ibadan, Nigeria; and the future Energy Policy Option (National Association for Energy Economics) Trenchard Hall, University of lbadan, Nigeria, among others.

Dr Akintunde is a member of several academic and professional associations include the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics (NAEE), International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), Nigerian Environmental Study/Action Team, Nigeria Environmental Society, Institute of certified Forensic Professionals of Nigeria and Associate Member, Nigerian Institute of Management among others. He became a registered Environmental Manager(REM) in 2016.

As part of his community and social responsibilities, he has facilitated developmental projects for the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo such as: Vocational and Technical Education Building; Student Affairs Complex; 500-Seater Lecture Theatre 1 & II; Construction of Roads and Drainages; the Indoor Sport Complex; a New Administrative Block; a 2000-Capacity Lecture Theatre; a 1,500-Capacity Lecture Theatre; and the Guidance and Counselling Building, among others. Some of these projects are completed and commissioned while others are on-going. He also facilitated solar powered street light projects in the following locations:

(2) Ladindin-Isokun- Ojongbodu Road in Oyo West LG
(3) Tengba-Alalubosa Road in Oyo East LG

(8) Akingbile – Oluana Area in Akinyele LG

(11) Oki Village Road in Egbeda LG
(12) Elekuro Road, Ogbere in Ona Ara LG
(13) Oja Iminni Road, Ilora in Afijio LG

(15) Orisunbare Village in Oluyole LG
(16) Akilapa Village in Oluyole LG
(17) Unity Road, Cele Area in Oyo West LG

(20) Agidigbo FM Radio Station and its environs, Rainbow Junction, along Iwo Road – Ojoo expressway, in Ibadan.

Dr Akintunde has equally facilitated construction of a block of 3 classrooms with a borehole and toilet in each of the following local schools:

(1) Tose Community Primary School, Tose in Akinyele LG
(2) AUD Primary School, llora in Afijio LG
(3) Yaaye Community Basic Primary School, Elegbo in Atiba LG
(4) St. Peter Primary School, Odan in Egbeda LG
(5) IDC Primary School, Oke-Orere, Lalupon in Lagelu LG
(6) Ibere Community High School, lbere in Ogo Oluwa LG
(7) EIekuro HIgh School, Ogbere in Ona Ara LG
(8) Ebenezer Primary School, Orisumbare in Oluyole LG
(9) Adebimpe Community Primary School Adebimpe in Oyo East LG
(10) ADS Grammar School, Opapa in Oyo West LG

(11) Ikunsin Community High School, Ikunsin in Surulere LG.

Dr. Yunus Akintunde also facilitated the construction of a block of 2 Classrooms with office and store at Pakoyi Community Primary School, Enuoranoba and ADS Primary School, Alagbon in Oyo West Local Government Area and solar-powered bore for the following communities:

(1) Iroko Community opposite Iroko Grammar Schook, iroko in Akinyele LG
(2) a. Adogba Junction, Ward 6, Egbeda
      b. Oluwo Ward 9, Egbeda
(3) Kanisuru-Oko-Oba Area in Oyo East
(4) a. Isokan-Omokiti Area
      b. Agbeni-Ajiroba Village, Fashola
      c. Pakoyi, Community all in Oyo West.

in addition, Dr Akintunde has also seen to the facilitation of ICT centres (knowledge access venue) in Oranyan Grammar School, Oyo; Abiodun Atiba Memorial Secondary School, Oyo; Ansar ud-Deen Grammar School, Opapa, Oyo and the Department of Minerals, Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law (DMPLEL), Faculty of Multidisciplinary
Studies, University of Ibadan. Some of his other community relations include the distribution of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms to less privileged students.

As part of his social responsibilities to the society at large, Yunus has served as the Patron, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Oyo State chapter; First President, Centre for Petroleum, Energy and Economics Law Students Association (CPEELSA), National
Secretary, National Council of Muslim Youth Organizations, Nigeria, (NACOMYO) Secretary, World Assembly of Muslim Youths (WAMY), First President, Association of Science Students, Lagos State University (LASU ); First President, Muslim Students Society (MSS), LASU and Chairman, Oyo State Taekwondo Association, and a member of Golf Club, lbadan. On the political front, Dr Akintunde has served as the Chairman, APC State Registration Committee for Osun State (January, 2014); Chairman, APC State Congress Committee for Kwara State (April, 2014) and Member, APC House of
Representative (Serving Members) Aspirants Screening Committee (December,2014).

Dr. Yunus Akintunde is a recipient of many honours and awards. He is a Justice of Peace of Oyo State and a recipient of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (Ibadan Branch) Meritorious Service Award. He is currently an Associate Lecturer (Pro bono) at the Department of Minerals, Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law, Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies, University of lbadan, lbadan, Nigeria.

Dr Yunus Akintunde is a passionate leader who has mentored many, and is committed to the welfare of others. As a leading proponent of good economic governance anchored on the principle of effective partnership for development, he has developed a mastery in the coordination and management of complex multi-party and multidisciplinary public and private sector projects. He has an uncommon expertise in the promotion and design of strategies for sustenance of good economic governance.
One of his attributes is the ability to delegate effectively and encourage the people working with him. He is a great team leader and player with excellent interpersonal skills. He is a critical thinker with strong analytical skills. He is reliable, dependable and a stickler for quality. The contribution of Dr Akintunde to humanity cannot be over emphasized. He is a leader with a clear vision and with a clear, exciting idea of where he is going and what he is trying to accomplish and also an excellent strategic planner and organizer with very high managerial skills. He Exhibits uncommon ability to anticipate future prospects with striking accuracy. He is a political strategist and tactician whose contribution in the field of politics will surely stand the test of time.

Dr Yunus Akintunde is happily married to Alhaja Modinat Akintunde and they are blessed with beautiful children.
