Renaming Tech U after Ajimobi, A Pyrrhic Honour ! By Morufu Smith
Renaming Tech U after Ajimobi, A Pyrrhic Honour ! By Morufu Smith.
Renaming Tech U after Senator Ajimobi by Governor Seyi Makinde was an afterthought and it’s most likely that circumstances engendered by hideous alliances that prevailed during the last governorship election informed this honour. If Seyi Makinde had lost the second tenure election, would he have had opportunity to honour Senator Ajimobi, something he didn’t deem fit to do for almost four years he has been in office? Why Tech U? If Ajimobi had not built the university, would Makinde have renamed another public monument in his honour? Does it mean Senator Ajimobi did not do enough in Oyo State to deserve such honour of renaming public monuments after him?
It’s too late to cry when the head is off. I am not impressed by this pyrrhic honour. The best honour Seyi Makinde should have done to Senator Ajimobi was to give him state burial when he died, and this he bitterly refused to do, not even a condolence visit to the family! And to the point of morbid distaste that Seyi Makinde did not allow Senator Ajimobi to be buried on his property gifted to him by Aare Azeez Arisekola Alao. I won’t be surprised if Seyi Makinde goes ahead to release the said property to Ajimobi family and call for settlement out of court. It may likely be a part of compromises agreed on for him to have a smooth ride during the last election.
Senator Abiola Ajimobi! You have already earned the honour of the achievement of building the first technical university in Nigeria for Oyo State. Renaming the monument after you is not an honour, it’s a deserving reward for your passion to bequeath a better Oyo State. As you rest on in your grave, may Allah continue to spray His perfumes of forgiveness into your grave, Amin!
