SELF TALK

Self talk is a natural phenomenon and it is very important because it can have a big impact on how we feel and what we do. This is an inner voice of the mind in which we dialog with our sub-consciousness. This dialog is not usually voiced but the winning voice in that dialogue will determine our outward dispositions. A study has it that we speak about 50,000 words to ourselves each day in self talk.

Self talk is commonly known as the power of confession. However, it is deeper and wider than mere confession because sometimes we tend to behave contrary to our confession. Rather, self talk encompasses much more than what we speak or act out. We do self talk when we are alone, when we meet various persons and situations. Much of our self-talk depends on our personality and thinking.

Self talk has a number of benefits such as improvement of self esteem and confidence, improvement of our mental health, enhancement of success; and ease of stress and hurts.

There are basically three types of self talk which are the instructional, positive and the negative self talk. Some people have any of these types as an initial natural instinct while some others shift from one self talk to another as they evolve.

Instructional self talk consists of technical aspects of our performance; negative self talk produces anxiety, fear and doubt while positive self talk improves attitude, energy and efforts.

The only type of self talk which can defeat us is the negative self talk. Notwithstanding, the good news about negative self talk is that it can be corrected. It requires time and practice to correct one’s negative self-talk. We must be conscious to differentiate the three types of self talk in order to determine our lives’ success or defeat.
