WHEN YOUR BOSS IS A PAL.
Hi reader, I’m pleased to write to you.
Does today’s gist topic ring a bell? It took some time before I could adjust and effectively take up a switch when I worked for a pal. I will share the lessons I learnt during that phase with you.
I was never slack with work, that was not an issue. The main issue was my interactions and communication with my boss during the office hours.
At first, I noticed that each time I addressed him by his first name, the atmosphere of the office would go cold especially if we were with the other members of the team. So, I introduced Mr. to his name and I would add “sir” to any response I gave.
Secondly, I realized that anytime there was a correction from his end, I would judge it from a pal level. Typical of a boss, he was not soft with his corrections and I took it as insulting which in turn affected my psychological response even though I managed not to show it. This didn’t mean that I never took or effected the corrections, I did but with some iota of dissatisfaction.
However when I became self aware of the difference between office and after office hours and the relationships we shared, I was able to comport myself better during office hours and also feel free with him after office hours.
We need to understand and respect these boundaries in order to enjoy whatever relationships we share with our bosses. Your boss may not be just a pal, he or she may be your lover or spouse, you can apply the same understanding I shared so as to avoid unnecessary clash or grudges that can sever the relationships you both share.
Good luck!
