Ondo Election: Speculation Mounts As “President Tinubu’s Anointed Candidate” Yet to Emerge

As the April primaries for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State draw closer, uncertainty grips the political landscape, with all eyes on President Bola Tinubu’s yet-to-be-revealed favoured gubernatorial Standardbearer of the state, following the demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The absence of a clear directive from President Tinubu, a significant influencer in Ondo State politics, has left aspirants scrambling for endorsements and support. With Governor Akeredolu’s sudden passing, the dynamics within the APC have shifted, leaving potential successors without his coveted backing.

Despite claims of endorsement by some aspirants, reactions from Akeredolu’s camp have dismissed these assertions, further complicating the race. This uncertainty has halted the purchase of nomination forms by aspiring candidates, reflecting the prevailing confusion within the party.

Efforts to engage President Tinubu directly have proven futile, leading aspirants to explore alternative channels, including reaching out to Mr President’s family members and political associates for insight and support.

Meanwhile, the National Working Committee of the APC remains in a holding pattern, awaiting directives from the President regarding the Ondo governorship election. While over eleven aspirants have shown interest, only six are considered genuine contenders, with others perceived as either seeking relevance or positioning for future party considerations.

The key contenders in the looming primaries include Aiyedatiwa, Oke, Akinfolarin, Kekemeke, Akinterinwa, and Jimoh, each vying for the coveted endorsement that could tilt the scales in their favour as the race heats up.
