2027: Reno Omokri predicts ‘very wide’ Tinubu victory
Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has predicted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election by a “very wide majority”, chronicle.ng reported.
Omokri made the prediction during an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Channels Television’s Politics. Today, arguing that Tinubu is entering the 2027 contest from a stronger political position than he did in 2023.
According to him, Tinubu has consolidated his political base, gained the support of more state governors and increased his acceptance, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
“The best predictor of future events is past events,” Omokri said.
He recalled that Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election despite facing what he described as a hostile federal government, a controversial naira policy and a confident opposition.
Omokri said Tinubu had about 19 governors supporting him at the time, compared with what he claimed was about 30 governors now.
“How much more now that he’s an incumbent, he has about 30 governors?” he asked.
Omokri Points to Northern Support
The ambassador-designate also cited recent political rallies in Katsina and Kano as evidence of what he considers growing support for Tinubu in the North.
“Tell me about his acceptance in Northern Nigeria. Have you seen his rallies? Did you see the rally that just held in Katsina? Did you see the one that held in Kano? Did you see the numbers?” he said.
When asked whether rally attendance could reliably predict electoral outcomes, Omokri pointed to political alignments involving states linked to Tinubu’s potential challengers.
He identified former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi as likely major opponents of Tinubu in 2027.
Atiku, Obi Strongholds Cited
Omokri argued that political developments in Adamawa, Atiku’s home state, were favourable to Tinubu.
“In Adamawa State, the present governor, the incumbent governor, and then the immediate past governor are for the president. They are mobilising for the president. They are holding rallies for the president,” he said.
He also highlighted Anambra State, where Peter Obi served as governor, saying the current governor’s support for Tinubu was politically significant.
“In Anambra State, where Peter Obi comes from, the governor is for the president. He’s mobilising for the president,” Omokri said.
Why 2027 Could Differ From 2023
Omokri further argued that some factors that influenced voting in 2023 may not carry the same weight in the 2027 election.
He cited the APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, which he said generated “fear-based” and protest votes among some Christian voters.
“There were protest votes because people had never seen in Nigeria a Muslim-Muslim ticket. So there was a lot of fear-based votes by Christians who thought that, okay, well, we’re going to be having a government that’s going to be anti-Christian,” he said.
According to Omokri, Tinubu’s subsequent engagements with Christian communities have helped weaken those concerns. He pointed to the President’s attendance at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in Rome as one example.
“We’ve had Christian presidents who never did that under Yakubu Gowon,” he said.
Omokri ultimately expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure a decisive victory in 2027.
“Nigerians have fared well under this administration. So that protest vote is going to disappear. The president is going to win by a very wide majority in 2027,” he declared.
