Ajibola Basiru: The Journey of A Lawyer, Lawmaker and Political Strategist

In Nigerian politics, some political journeys are built around years of public service, professional excellence and a gradual rise through different levels of leadership.
One such journey is that of Senator (Dr.) Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

A lawyer, scholar, former senator and party administrator, Basiru’s political career reflects a progression from professional practice and public service to the national leadership of Nigeria’s governing political party.
Born on July 1, 1972, in Osogbo, Osun State, Basiru pursued an academic and professional path that combined law, scholarship and public service. He holds degrees in Law, including an LLB and LLM, and a PhD in Property Law from the University of Lagos. He also studied Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Ilorin.

His legal career included work with Olaniwun Ajayi Chambers and later as a partner at M.A. Banire & Associates.
But Basiru’s journey would eventually move beyond the courtroom.
FROM PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE TO PUBLIC SERVICE
Before reaching the national political stage, Ajibola Basiru served in the Osun State Government.
He served as Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties and later as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.
These appointments placed him at the intersection of law, governance and public administration.
His experience in government would later become an important foundation for his transition into legislative politics.
THE SENATE YEARS
In 2019, Basiru was elected to represent Osun Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate.
His time in the Senate marked another significant chapter in his political career.
He served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora, Non-Governmental Organisations and Civil Societies before later becoming Senate Spokesperson and Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs. (State House Abuja)
As a legislator, Basiru was involved in debates surrounding national policy, legislation, governance and economic development.
In an interview reflecting on his Senate record, he highlighted constituency interventions including the provision of potable water and boreholes in communities across Osun Central. He also pointed to his legislative work on the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and other national legislation.
His Senate years also gave him a national platform to communicate legislative activities and articulate the position of the institution to the Nigerian public.
FROM LAWMAKER TO PARTY ADMINISTRATOR
In August 2023, another major chapter began.
Ajibola Basiru emerged as National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress.
The position placed him at the centre of the administrative machinery of one of Nigeria’s major political parties.
As National Secretary, his responsibilities include party administration and coordination of party activities, while his public engagements have frequently focused on the organisation of the party and its political programmes.
The transition from senator to national party secretary also demonstrated another dimension of his political career: moving from legislative representation to the organisational side of party politics.
A POLITICAL IDENTITY BUILT ON COMMUNICATION
One of the defining features of Basiru’s public career has been communication.
From his legal background to his years as a senator and Senate spokesperson, he has consistently operated in environments where the ability to explain policies, defend positions and engage the public is essential.
Today, as APC National Secretary, that experience remains part of his political identity.
His role requires interaction with party leaders, elected officials, stakeholders and members across different parts of the country.
A JOURNEY STILL UNFOLDING
Ajibola Basiru’s political story is therefore not simply about the positions he has occupied.
It is a story that cuts across law, academia, public administration, legislative politics and party leadership.
From Osogbo to the legal profession, from Osun State Government House to the Nigerian Senate, and from the Senate to the national secretariat of the APC, Basiru has continued to move through different stages of public life.
His journey also illustrates how professional experience can evolve into political responsibility.
Today, as National Secretary of the APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru stands at another important point in that journey.
And as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, his role within the national leadership of the party places him among the political actors whose activities will continue to attract national attention.
For Senator Ajibola Basiru, the journey from lawyer to lawmaker and from lawmaker to national party administrator represents decades of education, professional practice and political engagement.
