Bodija Road Repairs: Makinde Must Stop Turning Public Projects Into Political Showpieces — Alli Campaign Council
The Campaign Council of the APC governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator (Dr) Sharafadeen Alli, has condemned the repairs on the Bodija Market Road shortly after commissioning, describing the development as embarrassing and unacceptable.
The council said the situation exposes what it described as the Gov. Seyi Makinde administration’s obsession with commissioning projects before adequately establishing their quality, durability and value to the people.
It said that Makinde cannot celebrate a road as a major achievement and then expect residents to remain silent when the same road requires repairs almost immediately after commissioning.
“The Bodija road episode raises serious questions about the quality of work delivered, the materials used, supervision and certification.
“If the road was genuinely completed and properly inspected, why did repairs become necessary so soon after the governor’s commissioning ceremony? This is public money, not Governor Makinde’s personal wealth.
“The people deserve to know the project cost, contractor, construction standards and officials who certified the road. Government must stop treating commissioning ceremonies as substitutes for durable infrastructure,” the Council said.
According to the council, the Bodija market road is strategically important because it serves traders, residents, motorists and customers who depend on the route for daily commercial activities.
It argued that failure of such infrastructure shortly after commissioning could impose additional economic burdens on residents and raise legitimate concerns about whether taxpayers are receiving value for their money.
The council challenged the Makinde administration to publish the relevant details of the project instead of allowing residents to speculate about the circumstances surrounding the immediate repairs.
It said transparency should include the contract sum, scope of work, contractor’s identity, supervising authorities, construction specifications and certification documents before commissioning.
“Governor Makinde owes Oyo residents an explanation, not another political celebration. A government that spends public money must be prepared to account for every project and demonstrate that the people received value.
“Senator Alli believes Oyo people deserve infrastructure built to last, not roads that look impressive during commissioning and begin demanding repairs shortly afterwards. The state’s commonwealth must be deployed judiciously for lasting public benefit,” it said.
The council said the development should serve as a warning against using infrastructure projects primarily as political publicity, insisting that performance should be judged by durability rather than commissioning ceremonies.
It urged residents to continue demanding accountability, stressing that roads constructed with public funds belong to the people and must meet acceptable standards.
The council maintained that Senator Alli would prioritise transparency, quality infrastructure and prudent management of public resources, saying Oyo State deserved governance focused on lasting development rather than political showmanship.
