Youth Ministry and Ayo Wisdom Olawande’s Midas Touch | By Hon Monsuru ’Tunde Adeyemo ‘Socrates’

Wholeheartedly, I hail Nigeria’s Minister of Youth Development, Honourable Ayo Olawande Wisdom, for his Midas touch in the Federal Ministry of Youth Development. In a space where leadership is often judged by noise rather than outcomes, Ayo Wisdom has distinguished himself with a rare blend of competence, capability, accessibility, warmth, and compassion – qualities that have translated directly into tangible youth-focused progress across the country.

Whether one loves him or not, the truth is clear: Hon. Ayo Olawande has driven significant strides as minister of youth development, concentrating on a practical, results-oriented approach to youth empowerment. Under the broader framework of the “Renewed Hope Agenda”, his leadership has prioritised entrepreneurship, digital skills, and grassroots engagement, meeting young people where they are and providing pathways to where they ought to go.

Among Hon. Ayo Wisdom’s achievements are:

(1) Youth Empowerment and Skills Acquisition: Building Futures, Not Promises

Hon. Ayo Olawande has demonstrated that empowerment begins with skills and mentorship. His notable interventions include:

•Capacity Building: Training and empowering over 10,000 youths nationwide through vocational skills and mentorship programmes.

•Youth Skills Acquisition Program (YSAP): Training over 5,000 youths across employable fields to strengthen competitiveness in the labour market.

•One Youth, Two Skills Campaign: Championing a policy vision that ensures Nigerian youth acquire at least two marketable skills for economic self-sufficiency.

•Corpreneur Support Initiative (CSI): Partnering with Wema Bank to provide startup grants to NYSC members trained in vocational skills, implemented across multiple states.

This is leadership that understands the realities of Nigeria’s job market: young people do not merely need “hope”; they need tools, training, and starter capacity.

(2) Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Turning Talent into Opportunity

Our man, Hon. Ayo Olawande’s second major strength is his commitment to scaling youth opportunity through digital innovation and enterprise creation.

Key initiatives under this direction include:

• Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA): Launching a free online platform for vocational training, job fairs, and a digital community—aimed at creating five million jobs.

•Youth Innovation Hub: Introducing a support structure for 500 startups, with reported outcomes of 2,000 jobs.

•Youth Entrepreneurship Fund: Engineering access to capital for young entrepreneurs to start and expand businesses.

-Agriculture Initiative: Fostering training and engagement through platforms such as NIYEEDEP (www.niyeedep.org), focused on modern farming and agribusiness, with an ambition of 6 million jobs in 2025.

In short, this is the kind of ministry transformation that moves beyond supervision into ecosystem-building, creating spaces where youth can learn, build, and earn.

(3) Safety, Security, and Youth Engagement: Listening to the People

Hon. Ayo Olawande’s tenure has also addressed the critical need for youth safety and constructive engagement with relevant institutions.

Notable programmes include:

• Nigerian Youth Help Desk: Facilitating a central hub while collaborating with the Ministry of Police Affairs to report harassment, police misconduct, and submit feedback.

• “Young & Secure” Initiative: Focusing on reducing mistrust between youth and security agencies.

•Youth Community Intervention on Drug Abuse (YOCIDA): Pioneering community-level interventions to tackle drug abuse at the grassroots.

These efforts signal a leadership style that recognises youth are not only to be empowered economically but also to be protected, heard, and integrated into national peace and security goals.

(4) Infrastructure and Governance: Making Systems Work

Great youth development requires systems that function, processes that reduce friction and governance that delivers.

Overall, under Hon. Olawande’s helmsmanship, we have witnessed the following:

•Youth House Initiative: Securing approval for construction of Youth Houses in Abuja and Youth/Green Houses in all 774 local government areas.

•National Youth Conference: Hosting a platform to engage youth stakeholders and bring their voices into policymaking.

Digitalisation of the Ministry: Launching the Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS) to transition operations toward paperless governance and improved efficiency.

•Strategic Partnerships: Fostering collaborations with the European Union for youth entrepreneurship support and with the African Union to develop the Continental Youth Development Framework.

The signature of his leadership remains proactive presence and practical engagement.

What makes Ayo Olawande stand out is not merely what he plans. It is how he shows up. His tenure has been defined by a proactive, highly engaged posture toward youth affairs, moving beyond conventional administrative duties into direct field engagement with young people.

A flagship example is the Corpreneur Support Scheme, structured to support NYSC members with funding and bridging opportunities through engagement with institutions like the Bank of Industry and the private sector. The intervention extended to corps members, reinforcing the philosophy that youth development must be supported by access, not assumption.

He also championed the “One Youth, Two Skills” campaign and initiated the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA), a platform designed to convert youth potential into structured learning and measurable outcomes.

Conclusively, Hon. Ayo Olawande’s transformation of Youth Development Through Vision and Action is top-notch. His dedication, vision, and leadership have reshaped the youth development landscape—empowering countless young people across Nigeria with skills, digital pathways, entrepreneurial support, safety interventions, and better governance systems.

At a time when many leadership styles remain theoretical, Ayo Olawande has proven that youth development works best when it is strategic, inclusive, accountable, and intensely practical. For that, Nigeria’s youth and indeed the nation owe him sincere appreciation.

Long live youth development. Long live effective leadership. Long live Ayo Wisdom Olawande.
